The Phuket
vegetarian Festival finds its origin in 1825, when a Chinese opera troupe's
crossing through the island to entertain the miners, seriously fell ill. To
heal, she was a vegetarian diet while praying the gods. This miraculous healing
gave rise to the vegetarian Festival which continues since then, each year
during the tenth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. The event holds 10 days,
from September 23rd to October 02nd, during which we made
offerings to the gods and stop to eat meat to purify his soul. Especially
followed by the Chinese population, this ritual has become a party that seizes
the entire island of Phuket. A religious procession circled the city the 6th
day. It should be to dress in white, to practice sexual abstinence and don’t
drink alcohol during these 10 days. Sacred rituals are performed during spectacular
and impressive parades: insertion of sharp and pointed objects on different
parts of the body and the face, barefoot walk over hot coals...
In the program from October 17th
to 26th 2014: an international competition, a competition reserved
for short and long Asian films, as well as a competition for documentaries and
young filmmakers. More than 150 films from around the world are presented. The
festival offers also a panorama of Thai films and retrospectives. It imposes
himself, year after year, as one of the major events of the film scene in
Southeast Asia and in the world.
The Bangkok Airways
airline has announced the launch of four domestic and regional routes departing
from Chiang Mai, in order to better prepare the entrance of Thailand next year in
the economic community of ASEAN (AEC). From October 26th 2014, the
Thai private company will offer a daily flight between Chiang Mai airport and
Phuket, with departure at 2:20 p.m. (arrival 4:25 p.m.) and 'back' at 11:30
a.m. (arriving 1:40 p.m.). Operated by Airbus A320 of 162 seats, this road will
be in competition with those of Thai Smile (subsidiary of Thai Airways) and the
low cost Thai Air Asia. Other news for Bangkok Airways, the Chiang Mai – Udon
Thani flight will have two daily rotations in ATR 72-500 of 70 seats, with
departures at 6:30 a.m. and 3:55 p.m. (arrived 7:55 a.m. and 5:20 p.m.) and
returns at 8:25 a.m. and 5:55 p.m. (arrived 9:50 a.m. and 7: 20 p.m.). Only the
low cost Nok Air is present on this axis. Outside Thailand and from October 26th,
Bangkok Airways will deploy an ATR three times per week between Chiang Mai and
Mandalay, departures are scheduled the Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 11:00
(arrival 12:05 p.m.) with return of Myanmar at 12:50 p.m. (arrival 2:45 p.m.).
No competition on this link, unlike the one that will connect the northern city
to Yangon: the flights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (departure
11:00 a.m., return 12:50 p.m.) will face those of Golden Myanmar Airlines and
Air KBZ from early November). The company offers also in Chiang Mai links from
the capital Thai and Samui. Bangkok Airways will also reinforce two other
domestic lines, adding a fourth daily flight between Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi and
Krabi and a third between the capital and Chiang Rai (the A320 are deployed on
these two axes). In addition to Bangkok, its domestic network has now ten
domestic destinations: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Sukhothai, Pattaya
(U-Tapao), Trat, Phuket, Samui, Krabi and Udon Thani, and eleven international:
Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Phnom Penh, Siem
Reap, the Maldives, Dhaka, Mumbai, Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw. It operates
a fleet of 26 aircraft, including eight Airbus A320s, ten A319 and eight ATR
72-500s.
The low
cost air company Jetstar Pacific will propose next month its first route to
Bangkok, with a daily flight departing from Ho Chi Minh City.
From October 12th 2014,
Vietnam Airlines and Qantas Airways (via the Jetstar group) specialized in low
cost flights will offer a daily departure from its base the airport of Ho Chi
Minh City-Tan Son Nhat and Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi. The departure is scheduled at
1.00 p.m. to arrive at 2.30 pm, with a return way of Thailand at 3.20 p.m. to
arrive at 4:50 p.m. Jetstar Pacific will have to work hard on this route
operated by Airbus A320 of 180 seats, facing competition from VietJetAir and
Thai AirAsia low cost companies and Thai Airways and Viet Nam Airlines regular
companies. It's the second international route for Jetstar Airways after Macao,
its network until now is concentrated on domestic services (TPHCM therefore,
Hanoi, Danang, Vinh, Haiphong, Buon Ma Thuot, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc and Hue).
With its fleet of seven A320s, it remains the smallest of the Jetstar Group's
subsidiaries.
MYANMAR
Shwezigon
pagoda festival in Bagan
The Shwezigon pagoda is a large
stupa to Nyaung U, near Bagan. Inspired by the Lawkananda, it served as a model
to many other stupas of Burmese style. It’s bell-shaped and is based on
three terraces of brick decorated with Terra cotta plaques decorated with
scenes from the jataka (previous lives of the Buddha). All around we find many
small temples and little pagodas, as well as effigies of the 37 Nats, arranged
to pay homage to the stupa. The pagoda was built from 1059 by King Anawrahta to
house a bone of the jaw and a tooth of the Buddha that he had obtained at the
end of its campaign against the Kingdom of Dali (in the current Yunnan). It was
completed under the reign of his son Kyanzittha, in 1102: inside of the complex
we find a stone pillar bearing inscriptions. It’s the most revered pagoda in
Nyaung U. A festival is organized every year in October and it holds 23 days.
Thidingyut Festival
(Festival of lights)
Thadingyut
marks the
end of Buddhist lent (vassa) and pays homage to the return of Buddha on
Earth, in the world of humans, after a stay in the heavens where he spread his
teachings to celestials and his mother Maya, who died 7 days after his birth.
That day, on the full moon of the Thadingyut month, the seventh month of the
lunar calendar, humans celestial created three trails, one of gold, one of
silver and the third of Ruby: Buddha took the trail of Ruby to descend to
Earth. The tradition continues until now and the Burmese decorate houses,
streets and public buildings of light bulbs and candles which symbolize these
three trails. The Festival of lights is the most popular festival in Burma
after the New Year (Thingyan). The three days of festivities from
October 25th to 27th 2014 are pretexts to many balls of
paper and balloon festival throws in the air, zatpweof shows, free movies projections and banquets... The Burmese are
going to pagodas to pray and pay homage to the monks, most fast on this
occasion. Children and parents will offer each other gift. People visit
themselves and make peace in the event of conflict. The Festival of lights is
an opportunity for the Burmese to reconcile with family, friends and neighbors.
This is probably in Taunggyi,
capital of Shan State, that the feast is the most spectacular. It takes place
in October and not in November as in the rest of the country. The inhabitants
of the region, all minorities combined, descend from the surrounding mountains
or come to Inle Lake in costumes to scroll in the city: profusion of
illuminated floats, picturesque processions, shan dance competition, throws
balls and balloons filled with Fireworks which explode in the air, to
infinity... visually tracing the trail of light that borrowed Buddha to down on
Earth...
At the full moon, October 26th
2014, the faithful lit thousands of candles and lay many flowers as a tribute
to the Buddha. The Kyaik Hti Yo pagoda is one of the most sacred of Buddhism.
It’s one of the most important places of pilgrimage of this religion: the pilgrims
flock from across the country, making the road on foot through the mountains in
order to see this pagoda which dates of 2 400 years. The site is very difficult
to access. The pagoda, 190 km from Yangon (Rangoon), is located on a rock
completely covered with gold leaf and which remains in equilibrium at the edge
of a precipice, at more than 1,000 meters above sea level. Kyaik Hti Yo means
"the golden rock.
LAOS
At full moon, the ruins of the
Wat Phou pre-Khmer temple become the place of meeting and exchanges of hundreds
of pilgrims from other provinces, but also Thailand and Cambodia. In the
program, on October 8th and November 6th 2014, February 3rd
and May 1st 2015 from 6 pm to 9 pm: illuminations of the site and
traditional music concerts. The full moon of February corresponds to the great
Buddhist festival of Mahakhabousa. It lasts 3 days and starts 2
days before the full moon in February. It’s a pilgrimage feast taking the
appearance of a fair with boxing, buffaloes and cocks fighting, lotteries,
amusement rides, and quest bonzes the day of the full moon, about 7 o'clock in
the morning, in the ruins... The archaeological site of Wat Phou (literally
"mountain temple" in lao) is the largest of Laos. Cradle of Khmer
civilization, well before the Foundation of Angkor, it’s inscribed in the world
heritage of humanity by UNESCO.
Wat That Luang, the most
revered stupa in Laos and one of the most beautiful, about ten kilometers north
of Savannakhet, is the scene of a festival at the time of the full moon in
November from October 30 to November 6, 2014. In the early morning, the monks
from all over the country gather in the galleries that surround the stupa and
receive offerings of the faithful in the form of garlands of flowers. They
paraded in procession from Wat That Luang at Wat Si Muang, another great temple
of Vientiane, carrying garlands of flowers and food offerings from one temple
to another. These offerings are for the most necessitous. Also on program:
competitions of football, boxing, tennis and percussion. At nightfall, the monks’
torchlight processions still illuminate the streets. In recent years, this
celebration took a turn increasingly secular,
since there is an international fair whereby traders of Southeast Asia can make
themselves known. Outside of the temple stand all sorts of attractions that are
not religious.
The Savannakhet-Lao-Bao railway project awaits green
light
The Malaysian
company, Giant Consolidated Limited, responsible of the construction of the railway
line of 220 kilometers between Savannakhet and the Lao-Bao border (Vietnam-Laos),
just engage the Malaysian company DIGIMAP SND, which will be in charge of the
finalization of the study and the design of the plans project as well as its
follow-up. An agreement has just been signed on September 12th between
these two companies at the Don Chan Palace hotel in Vientiane, in the presence
of the Education and sports Ministers of Laos and its Malaysian counterpart and
the Malaysia Ambassador of Laos. The cost of this project is estimated at 4
trillion of Kip ($5 million). Under the terms of the contract signed with the
Government, the Malaysian company will operate the railway for a period of 50
years. "We are
waiting for the green light from the Government which should be given shortly,
"said the Malaysian company Adviser, Giant Consoli dated Limited. We work in close collaboration with
the public works and transport Department so that the study complies with the
specification. Our experts and workers teams are already on the spot to
organize the opening of the site. The problem of the unexploded gears was taken
into account by mine-clearing teams. They go to comb all areas affected by the
railway. »
The line will have
11 stations on its way, including four of large size. At each station, it’s
planned to build a school, a hospital, hotel infrastructure, and markets. The realization
techniques are identical to those of the Chinese railway line. Trains can circulate
at the speed of more than 120 kilometers per hour. « Then Laos, which doesn’t have access to the sea, can be
connected easily to the other ASEAN countries. This line will be an asset to the
socio-economic development of Laos and neighboring countries; it will
facilitate and accelerate the transport of goods. In addition, it will
encourage new investors to settle in the province. »
From October
18th to October 20th, “Les Artisans du Mekong” hosts a
photography workshop led by the photographer-writer Georges A. Bertrand,
historian of French art opens an exhibition at the same time.
These three days coincide with the
celebrations of the end of Buddhist lent, the pirogue feast and the Festival of
lights which marked the end of the rainy season.
Georges, who lived many years in
Indochina, was able to capture many aspects, including culture and traditions,
the history and the natural environment.
VIETNAM
During this festival of
religious and traditional rituals, from October 6th to 8th
2014, shows and popular games are organized (catch the duck, cook rice...) in
reference to the life of the farmers in the delta of the Red River to celebrate
the memory of Không Lô monk, who had the merit to cure the King Ly Thanh Tong
from a serious illness.
The village of
Trung Nguyen coffee
Located in the Centre of Buôn Ma Thuôt,
province of Dak Lak (the Central Highlands), the village of Trung Nguyên coffee
is an ideal place for all those who are interested in this precious beverage. With the desire to build a 'coffee paradise' for tourists
who visit the capital of the coffee, the Trung Nguyên company built a village
on 20 000 m². The project was finished in 2008 and has become the largest
Museum of coffee. The village is divided into two zones, a tasting zone and a
museum. The most attracting feature of the village is its garden of old coffee
trees. You can enjoy a cup of coffee under cover of their foliage.
The Museum is divided into several
sectors. Some recount the history of coffee in the world, other its areas of
culture, others culture techniques and processing, the ways of production,
preparation and consumption through the ages and around the world. In short, a complete overview of the subject. More than 500
objects are exposed which show the diversity of the art of tasting coffee, following
countries and the ages. Here are held many shows for the preparation of coffee,
as Italy cappuccino, coffee processing in Japan, style tasting coffee of the
Germans, the traditional method of the roasting the Êdê of Vietnam...
Visitors can also admire objects of
daily use of the Highlands inhabitants, including hoods for grain harvesting,
drying rooms, shellers...
The last point but not the least is
the gift shop where visitors can buy Trung Nguyên coffee and other products
such as bags and Brocade shirts before leaving the city of Buôn Ma Thuôt.
Several agencies are trying to negotiate with the
Government, in order to supple the visa obtaining procedures for seven countries:
France, Germany, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The idea,
initiated by the Culture, sports and tourism Ministry, as well as by the transport
Ministry would aim to drain more visitors from these countries, according to Tuoi Tre, Vietnamese
newspaper. It would seem that these tourists represent a market that remains on
spot longer, and more open to consumption. The Australians represent a market
for the low season. Statistics performed by agencies in Thailand (which exempt
61 countries) and in Malaysia (155 countries) have already demonstrated the
beneficial effects of the exemption of visas on local tourism.
Vietnam already facilitates the
entries from ASEAN countries (association of Southwest Asian Nations) for the
stays of less than 30 days. Visitors from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark,
Japan, South Korea and Russia, benefit, however, of an exception for the stays
of less than 15 days.
Beyond the Western potential, this
idea is also motivated by declining tourism from China to the Vietnam observed
following the recent conflict around the East Sea between the two countries. A
fall that specifically, following anti-Chinese protests that took place on may 11th in Hanoi, before extending to all major
cities of the country.
The folder should be soon submitted
to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, from which are issued the visa.
Record: the largest carp lantern of Vietnam
In August, a colossal lantern in form of carp was presented at
the Vincom Mega Mall shopping centre in the new urban City Times City, to Hanoi.
It's the largest lantern of Vietnam which has been certified as such, on August
21th, by Vietnam Guinness. This lantern was created from more than
5,000 multicolored lanterns by around 100 artisans who continuously worked from
August 1st to 18th to build this giant carp. From a height of 15 m
and a length of 32 m, it’s located in Times Square, before the Vincom Mega
mall. Special feature, it includes smart LEDs which ignition and intensity are
driven by the music broadcast in order to give a festive atmosphere worthy of a
Carnival.
Around this giant Lantern will be a group of small colorful carp pursuing
the Moon, representing the image of «Lý Ngư Vọng Nguyệt» (the
carp looks the Moon). The Vietnam Guinness records organization delivered on August
21st the national record certificate. The inhabitants of the capital
and of the surrounding area will be able to admire this giant Lantern original
carp, in a unique place, suitable for photography. The feast of mid autumn, of
which carp is one of the symbols, will result in the entire network of malls in
the Vincom group, whose Times City and Royal City, many activities as
traditional games for children, "moon cakes", a festival of flowers, and
a procession of lanterns in the shape of moon or star.
Dai Nam Van Hien:
the largest tourist park in Vietnam
Open since September 2008,
the Dai Nam Van Hien Park is a huge tourist complex extended over an area of 450 hectares in
Binh Duong province (South of Vietnam). Around 40 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh
City, Dai Nam Van Hien brings gather in one place, lakes, temples, leisure place, zoo, shopping centers, hotels,
restaurants and others, making it a tourist destination of choice. The
construction of the complex took around 10 years. The zoo has an area of more
than 80 hectares. We can observe all kinds of animals, reptiles or mammals as
rhinoceros, lions, white Tigers, elephants, bears, ostriches, chamois, zebras,
and wildebeest, monkeys squirrels, foxes, and other. A
large part of the local fauna is represented. "It took two years to
build the Zoo, said the Director of the Park. The cost of this project
amounted to 50 billion dong. The animals are well treated and
everything has been calculated so that visitors can observe them more closely
without disturbing them». The Dai Nam Van Hien park managers have
achieved their goal which was to host two million of tourists between 2008 and
2009 and to reach a turnover of 300 billion dongs. Between
2010-2013, the number of tourists increased by 30% a year and the turnover
by 50%. The Nam Van Hien Dai temple, also known as temple of the four
gratitudes, is one of the most important structures of the Park. Used as a
place of worship, it also hosts exhibitions on the history of the country. It’s
a reminder of the origins of the Vietnamese who have contributed to the
building of the country; the different dynasties, such as the Ly, the Nguyen
Ngo or the Hung Kings up to Ho Chi Minh President. A permanent exhibition is
intended for Buddha. The temple, which can hold about 3,000 people, is
decorated with representations of four supernatural creatures, the dragon, the
Unicorn, the turtle and the Phoenix. The ornaments include flowers and plants:
lotus, apricots, orchids, daisies and bamboo. A semicircular lake is located at
the entrance of the temple, surrounded by 54 water jets symbolizing the 54
ethnic groups living in Vietnam.
A water tower of 27 meters in height
in the shape of lotus seeks to translate the nobility and the desire of
development. This temple is based on the Bao Son Mountain which includes five
mountains. We do the ascent by a stairs, or by a cable car. At the top, a
nine-story tower, called Bao Thap, pays tribute to the indomitable traditions
of Vietnamese people. The work is representative of the traditional sculpture
of many villages of trades from all the country. An artificial river, Cuu Long,
has also been created to symbolize the Mekong and compose harmonious
landscapes. It meanders between the Dai Nam temple and crosses the mountain Bao
sound. The two shores are furnished of gardens, bonsai trees and other plants
as well as attractions such as a circus, a train, a "House of
laughter" (kind of ice palace), roller coasters and water slides. The
place made the happiness of children but also adults who can swim in the river.
They can also practice tai chi chuan, a Chinese art martial.
These recreational areas are
separated by green spaces and small alleys lined with colorful flowers. The
Park, built to international norms, offers a wide range of leisure activities
accessible to people of all ages. Reduced model of the Eiffel Tower, the statue
of liberty, of Angkor Wat, the Gold pagoda (Thailand), the Kremlin and a
sailboat from the 18th century are also exposed. The Park is steeped in cultural
and historic characteristics of the Vietnamese people whose quality and
diversity of its tourist services are equal to those of similar parks in the
region and in the world.
CAMBODIA
The commemoration of the anniversary
of Norodom Sihanouk (father of the current King Norodom Sihamoni), born October
31st 1922, is a pretext for a celebration across the country. The
royal palace is theoretically open to the public and a great feast is given.
"Once
upon a time... Phnom Penh", what the capital is and could become.
After a year of
work, researches in France at the overseas national archives or the French
architecture Institute, here in Phnom Penh, the small team of the Heritage
Mission delivers today the exhibition "Once upon a time…, Phnom
Penh", in the French Institute office.
A work which relies
on the work done by the Heritage Centre, institution of the Culture and fine
arts Ministry, to promote and recognize the urban and monumental heritage of Phnom
Penh.
“The aim of this
exhibition is to allow Cambodians to learn more about their city and to have a
better understanding of their city, explains Sylvain Ulisse from Heritage Mission.
The driver wire is the problem of water and how Phnom Penh developed with this
hydraulic constraint.”
A current question, due to the recent floods in September. “In order to
develop, Phnom Penh had to fill submerged lands and develop filling capacities
for not having the feet in water”. And add: " Sihanouk
King had already the project to fill the Boeung Kak Lake”.
The exhibition
presents the evolution of the city through so many unpublished archival
documents. She is playful and informative and is divided into three parts: the
genesis of Phnom Penh, the protectorate (1863-1953) and the independence and the
Snagkum Reast Niyum (1953-1970).
A vision of Phnom
Penh more artistic and contemporary complements the exhibition through the eyes
of two photographers, Jean-François Perigois and Chhay Kanha.
Also add two
conferences and a Roundtable, which will be about historic heritage,
architecture and current development. Besides the quality of the speakers, the
urban theme development promises passionate and exciting exchanges relating to
news and our daily lives. How to reconcile preservation of heritage, innovation
and sustainability? The round table «Phnom Penh, today and tomorrow "will
be on Tuesday, October 14th to share this reflection.
The conference
"An urban history of the Sangkum" will be more nostalgic with this
period which profoundly influenced the architecture of Phnom Penh.
